For many, Christmas is a wonderful time filled with family traditions like trimming trees, giving gifts, and baking cookies. One of the reasons I love Christmas is because I am a parent, and I love the sense of wonder and excitement and closeness that certain Christmas traditions bring into the heart of a child. Jesus loved children. He said, “…the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” is like a child. (Matthew 18:3)
For many others, though, Christmas is a discouraging and sad time remembering lost loved ones and better days gone by. There is no wonder, magic, or excitement. Any tradition is empty and lifeless.
This is why Jesus came. He came for those who have seen better days. He came for those who have lost the will to live. He came for those who are far from God and are genuinely seeking an encounter with Him. Christmas can bring that encounter!
Christmas is about a miracle. All of humanity was lost and without hope, yet God came down. Jesus is Immanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23). Jesus did not come to condemn people, He came to save people (John 3:17).
I hope you have a great Christmas…and if this is a difficult time for you, remember that God is there. He is there for you. He is there in the body of the church. He is there in His Word.
With all of your Christmas activities, don’t leave God out. Celebrate the miracle of Christmas. Read the Christmas story in Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2. Set up a manger scene. Pray with your family.
